MARQUETRY
OUR DNA
OUR JOURNEY INTO MARQUETRY
Leather Marquetry is the DNA of Mathilde. It is the process of intricately cutting pieces of leather and carefully in-laying them to create art, and it started mainly because we initially wanted to explore ways in maximising the usage of offcuts from our other leather projects. These were good leathers which were too small to create anything out of, but of good quality and would be such a waste to discard.
At first, the forms and shapes of our marquetry projects were simple. We used geometric patterns to create play of colours on everyday accessories. However, eventually our proficiency in the craft improved, so did the complexities of our design. Soon, we found ourselves constantly challenging different ways to create more interesting works that make us smile.
Leather marquetry requires immense technical skill to pull off accurately, but the end result always elicits a "WOW" that makes it worth all the effort.
MARQUETRY IN OUR WORKS
Leather marquetry is the culmination of more than 2 decades of leathercrafting experience, and we proudly showcase it in our collections. It has become our design lab to make best use of these experience, to experiment and create elegant and innovative ways of working with leather. It is always our desire to work with other artists to bring incredible works of art to everyone, and with marquetry, we now have a medium that allows us to marry the synergy of different artist together.
Mathilde bags are elegant and classic, simple to use and functional, yet offers a measure class and something different in the form of marquetry. I believe it is this uniqueness, as well as our neverending quest for excellence that makes Mathilde a truly unique boutique brand.
